I love Laurie Halse Anderson...I met her once, right when this book was released, and I love the fact that she, like myself, believes that school should not KILL kids' love of reading. That's a value I can definitely get behind, and I try not to be the giant joykill English teacher by building a lot of choice into my high school English classes...anyway, I could talk about teaching strategies forever, but this book was beautifully-written, though sometimes hard to read. I found Lia a bit of a frustrating character because she so completely puts herself and those she loves at risk in order to feel in control of her life. So, I tried to compare Lia's extremism to my own control issues and I found that was a place I could start to relate to her- after all, how many of us have tried to push people away because they threatened that fragile sense of control? That gave me a little bit more empathy for Lia, and I hope it expands my empathy for others in similar situations. I loved the weaving in of myth in this book- especially Persephone and the idea of "wintergirls." I love that Anderson attempts to give voice to characters who are, essentially, voiceless. Another value I can relate to...an amazing work and I recommend it to anyone who likes reading "true life" teen stories that look at high school from the non-mainstream perspective.
