Melinda's tree
Melinda's growth and healing throughout the year is compared to the growth and energy she puts into her tree art project. Looking at her struggles with the tree, compare and contrast that to her struggles in 9th grade. For instance, one similarity could be that just when she makes progress with her tree turkey bone sculpture, she backslides by losing her artistic vision and becoming "stuck". In a similar way, just as she is gaining confidence in art, and Ivy talks to her a bit, she has a run-in with IT that sends her scurrying away and causes her to have nightmares. What are other similarities/differences you see? Please add a comment pointing at least one similarity and one difference out between the growth of the tree and Melinda's growth throughout the book.

we see that while melinda starts to work out her life better she does better on the project like when that one girl starts talking to her she gets more confidence about her self and she starts talkin to that chick more she does better on her grades wich raises her confidence even more.At the end of the movie you see all these tree drawings that look nice. She gets the confedence to confront it about the rape but he just tries to attack her again but this timie she don't let her self.So this shows that by the time she's done with the tree she has alot of confidence by:steven
Interesting comments. Maybe if Melinda had been able to ask for help with the tree, she would have been able to ask for help with the rape- she wouldn't have felt so powerless in her life?
